NC500 GT. - 38 – Durness

Our home for a week here at the Durness camp site of Sango Sands overlooking Durness Beach as seen on my previous photo. This is the type of accommodation used by probably the majority of North Coast 500 explorers. Our home was the first on the right here. From here we are only a short walk to the famous Smoo cave. The NC 500: The Scottish 'North Coast 500' is one of the world’s most beautiful road trips. A route of just over 500 miles (516) of stunning coastal scenery, white sandy beaches, rugged mountains, remote fishing villages and hidden gems.

Half way around the NC500 route for me and I am here at the most north westerly village on the Scottish mainland boasting spectacular scenery with a rocky coastline, pristine beaches and turquoise waters. This is my agreed virtual meeting point with our Ipernity friend Roger (Grisly) before we venture further along this route. Roger antic-clockwise, now travelling south via the west coast and me, travelling first eastwards along the entire northern top of Scotland and then south via the east coast meeting again at our start point Inverness. We have always been great lovers of Scotland and so have traveled and holidayed up there whenever we could. This was Summer 2014 and this time we got up to the Northern highlands. We had a week on the very top Northwest coast about 15km from this spot at a small village called Durness. Enjoy my memory and pleasure of it here in this photo. Best full screen

The lovely Scottish Highlands

Another golden oldie here from June 2014. We have had a great day out exploring and walking around this north west corner of Scotland, having explored the Oldshoremore and Sandwood Bay area and so we are on our way back to our holiday caravan site at Durness. As we drive the 35km + road back we pass numerous glens and highland scenes, this is but only one. I believe we are driving through Strath Dionard and it is the River Dionard that we see here. A splendid spot, especially when one is alone with only the sound of birds and the odd splash as a fish jumps.

You just can’t beat a good sunset!

Our home lock-down does not enable me to get many good sunsets at the moment. So here is a splendid evenings shooting at Balnakeil Bay in the very North of Scotland from 2014. This was taken around 22:00 but I stood snapping for another hour getting the glorious after-effect lighting. As I took this, I was accompanied by about another dozen photographers all shooting the same scene, some doing long time exposures. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this. Enjoy full screen
