Take in the sea air here on Porlock hill, overlooking Lynton and Lynmouth. Another from my recent Somerset trip, that I just had to share. See below for another shared bench with the same view a little lower down the hill. Enjoy full screen.

Taken just off Porlock Marsh between Minehead and Porlock Weir in Somerset. “A groyne is a shore protection structure built perpendicular to the shoreline of the coast, over the beach and into the shoreface to reduce longshore drift and trap sediments.” Have a good weekend.

Looking north across the Bristol Channel towards South Wales from Porlock, Somerset. We are looking towards Ursa Major just above the lit tree with Ursa Minor a little higher, the Milky Way is just about viewable from the bottom right towards the top. A 11mm, 15 sec exposure at F3.5, 1600 ISO. (The 11mm on my Nikon DX crop sensor delivers a Field of view 90°x70°) The PiP gives a better idea of what we are looking at, showing the constellations at the exact same coodinates, date and time. Another look at Porlock Marsh. This time we see just a few of the trees that were once here before the whole area was flooded with saltwater after the sea breached the natural ridge of Porlock Bay in the winter of 1996. Before that, this area was pastoral farm land for grazing animals. Enjoy full screen ps a nice friendly face to this tree (in case you missed it on first glance.)

A wet miserable morning takes me down to Porlock Marsh. This big marsh area borders the sea to my left and the inland hillside and villages near Porlock to my right. I fell in love with this area which had many footpaths over the tidal marsh and border but it was the old dead trees that captured my imagination. A real sense of wanting more time in other seasons too so I could explore with different lighting and weather. That being said, I do like this subdued view here which would make a great setting for the Charles Dickens ‘Great Expectations’novel. Enjoy full screen

Somehow, we seem to be choosing a lot of damp weeks for our holidays in Britain this year. Here I am at the very picturesque seaside village of Porlock Weir in Somerset and capturing this shot between heavy showers. The tide is out and there are only a few of the numerous tourist that are usually here. The old lock to our left goes into a more sheltered section populated by local small boats. Enjoy the day.

Looking rather different from the local post-card pictures. We see here another view of this fashionable village. This photo demonstrates perhaps that it is not really necessary to have clear bright weather to make a picture. A wet walk now for us to the furthest low reaches of those woods we see in front of us on the left. “Porlock Weir is a harbour settlement approximately 1.5 miles west of the inland village of Porlock, Somerset. "Porlock" comes from the Old English port loca, meaning an enclosure near a harbour. Porlock Weir refers to the salmon stakes and traps that were situated along the shore. ~ Described further as an ancient seaside port and picturesque coastal village, situated on the edge of the Exmoor National Park in West Somerset. Surrounded by steep wooded slopes, verdant farmland and the heather covered moor, it provides the perfect base for walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers alike. A look down the coast with the old lookout tower here. 'Hurlstone point is a promontory of land between Porlock Weir and Minehead in the Exmoor National Park on the coast of Somerset, England. Hurlstone Point marks the boundary between Porlock Bay and Blue Anchor Bay in the Bristol Channel and is on the South West Coast Path'. Wiki Enjoy full screen.

On our way up to the watchtower (PiP) just anther 200m behind us we look east towards the heights of Porlock Hill with its Marshes below us just to the left of the stony beach. HBM, enjoy the day

Having just found a small parking spot on the heights of Porlock hill between Porlock and Lynmouth in Somerset we look north here over the Bristol Channel to South Wales. After days of rain, at last the sun comes out to play and what a difference that makes. Enjoy full screen.

As we leave Lynmouth and the Valley of the Rocks we take a stroll over Foreland Point. This view is looking west over Lynton, the larger sister village to Lynmouth which lies much below that to our right. The Valley of the Rocks is just beyond the 'v' shaped cutting (see note). The road we see here is the infamous Porlock Hill road with its very steep 1 in 4 (25%) inclines at both ends. Enjoy full screen.
