A last chance for us to see Melk before our return to the boat. A lot of traditional cobblestone here making these village streets a real pleasure to explore in this light. It seems that drying space for clothe washing is a premium in this village centre :) Enjoy full screen

As we almost finish our short tour of this delightful village and its fine abbey I spy a shop with its alcoholic wares on show just outside its window, Of course I could not resist a shot, if not a purchase! Enjoy full screen

As we take our leave from the Abbey we pass by this magnificent staircase which goes to the wider grounds and gardens. Time forbids me to do no other than run to the top, glance around and run back down. Enjoy full screen

As we find ourselves in this splendid entrance court-yard, already the light is going lower reminding us of returning to our waiting boat on the Danube River below the town. Its magnificent architecture is known worldwide and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The baroque building (1702 - 1739) on a rock above the Danube is one of the most visited art-historical sites in Austria.” The Abbey is home to 22 Benedictine Monks as well as being a school with 900 students. Having found our way up to the Abbey via the steps we find a grand entrance to the main courtyard. ‘Melk Abbey (German: Stift Melk) is a Benedictine abbey, founded in 1089, above the town of Melk, Lower Austria, on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube river, adjoining the Wachau valley. The abbey contains the tomb of Saint Coloman of Stockerau and the remains of several members of the House of Babenberg, Austria's first ruling dynasty.’ WiKi See PiPs Enjoy the day.

These steps climb up to the famous Melk Abbey and show us the way but something else is wondering about visiting too. The cat soon ran away as we approached. Maybe it had been watching a bird? Enjoy full screen
