This splendid castle is actually a Victorian neo-gothic building, built in 1840 for a retired Liverpudlian surgeon, James Dawson. This was purchased for the National Trust in 1926 and was made famous by the fact that Beatrix Potter spent a summer holiday there when she was 16 in 1882.
