The River Kent at Kendal

09 Oct 2024 10 20 105
A new river wall in the making here as the flood prevention scheme goes on for yet another year. The people of Kendal are quite fed-up with all this now. It has been going on for years and effects the river bank and promenades for a good way from the town centre. However my nephew had water to the edge of his front door in the great Kendal flood of 2022 and so they might feel safer when this is done. The river around here has caused bad flooding for many years now. High river walls and armoured glass fences atop must cost a fortune. HWW, enjoy the day.

Christmas Greetings to all.

A glimpse of a Christmas landscape we love to see, taken only three weeks ago in Cumbria, North West England. Actually at Kendal castle. I wish all of my Ipernity friends here a wonderful Christmas and remember others less fortunate than ourselves in other parts of the World. Let Peace, health and happiness abound.

HBM~Winter comes to Kendal

04 Dec 2023 27 17 196
A quick weekend in the Cumbrian town of Kendal gives us a surprise winter downfall of snow. This is one side of the hill up to Kendal Castle but the children have only one thing on their minds. The pip shows the same scene on the next day after more snow. Note my real HBM shot from almost the same place is on the adjacent page here. Enjoy the week.

A walk up to Kendal castle is always good but in this unexpected new snow its even better. See next photo for a view from the top.

The skies above Kendal Castle

This castle just above Kendal in our Lake District is interesting enough, but with an evening sunset sky like this, well it is what we photographers long for. Enjoy full screen.

Kendal Castle under the stars

01 Oct 2022 15 14 200
A quick visit to Kendal for the night gives me a rare chance to see stars. This hill and castle was not very far from my digs and so a steep run to the top of the hill gave me this reward. Unfortunately I had left my special ‘Clear Night Filter’ at home some 80+ miles away and so we get more of the town light glow than I would have liked. As can be seen the castle is flood-lit at this time of the year which posed the additional problem of what to expose for. Of course a compromise photo resulted which some might still find pleasing. ‘Kendal Castle is a medieval fortification to the east of the town of Kendal, Cumbria, in northern England. The castle, which is atop a glacial drumlin, was built in the 13th century as the Caput baroniae for the Barony of Kendal. By the 15th century, the Parr family owned the castle.’ Wikipedia The first PiP (adjacent photo) shows a shot from a little further away before I took this and if your monitor permits - you can see part of the Milky Way going up the screen from the top of the rightmost trees. The second Pip shows quite a different view taken a year or so back. Essential full screen

Heavens above

The view as I climbed up Castle Hill towards Kendal Castle. You can just see the Milky Way here as it goes from South to North overhead. I could have exposed longer showing more stars and the Milky Way better but that would have over-exposed the light pollution from the town just on the horizon here. The strange bright object is in fact a clump of trees bathing in the light of the floodlit castle. Enjoy this very large photo here (6000x4000) full screen.

The River Kent -revisited

A different view of reflections on this very attractive river in Kendal. The town is sometimes called ‘the old grey town’ because of so many of its buildings are constructed using the local Lake District slate. We see in the reflections a touch of that. Enjoy full screen

2021 - Life in reality

30 Dec 2021 18 14 233
September: As Covid retains its grip here in Kendal, we see how the local population have to protect themselves even in the open-air to purchase fresh provisions. We all hoped that 2021 would be better –safer than that dreaded year of 2020 but after early hopes, all was to disintegrate into new health fears and regulations set to protect us all. As I write this three of our British nations have put more stringent precautions in place with England expected to follow suit in the New Year. Mainland Europe and indeed many areas of the world are experiencing their highest Covid cases to date with the onslaught of the new variant Omicron. Ah well, for us here at this home, we carry on regardless, taking photos and trying to enjoy our lives whilst keeping safe and seeing our family periodically. Naturally, wearing mask and being as inoculated as possible is essential for all. Enjoy full screen.
