The high road to Broadford

05 Sep 2024 16 15 155
Isle of Skye. Coming down on the high road from Kylerhea gives us a glimpse of Broadford on the left here and the Applecross peninsular in the far background. A grand view even in this subdued soft lighting. Best full screen

Kylerhea Minor Lighthouse

01 Sep 2024 8 11 131
This stretch of water below Kylerhea is know as Kyle Rhea and is technically the Sound of Sleat too. The lighthouse was designed by David A & Charles Stevenson. Established in 1892. The Scottish mainland lies to the right and ahead as we are on the Isle of Skye.

The Kylerhea ferry

29 Aug 2024 20 27 215
A twenty minute ferry crossing takes cars and pedestrians alike from main land Scotland Glenelg to the Isle of Skye hamlet of Kylerhea. A rather unique craft as the entire car deck is on a turntable and is used at both ends to embark and disembark. I even got the impression that the turntable was turned entirely by hand too after watching it being manhandled around to be locked straight . I am on Skye here and looking up Loch Alsh with the mainland on my right. From here there is a gruelling road trip before reaching the main roads of Skye. Enjoy full screen

HBM~ A view from Kylerhea

26 Aug 2024 22 39 229
A fine little walk here above the Kylerhea Ferry crossing on the Isle of Skye. The bay across from us is on the mainland and shows a place called Bernera with Glenelg tucked away behind. The walk itself was called the Kylerhea Otter Haven walk and we walked to the Otter Hide without a single sighting. Ironically an Otter was playing just metres from our cottage window back at Balacara whilst we were here. HBM, enjoy the week.

The road down to Kylerhea

25 Aug 2024 13 7 178
A promise of a better weather day takes us back onto the Isle of Skye towards the old ferry crossing of Kylerhea near the village of the same name on the east coast. As you can see, not the weather we had hoped for, especially on this very hairy road. From here we can just about see the idyllic village of Glenelg across the water. Our destination lies just beyond sight at the bottom of the road then left for a mile or so. The weather was to improve! Best full screen

HFF~ Kyleakin Lighthouse

05 Jul 2024 21 33 164
A view of this lighthouse and fenced pier on the small Island of Eilean Bàn taken from high on the Skye bridge itself. Built in 1857 by David and Thomas Stevenson. It was discontinued in 1993. There were originally two lighthouse keepers resident with their families on the Island in a nearby cottage. When the lighthouse keeper moved out the lighthouse residence cottage (see PiP) was bought by the writer Gavin Maxwell (Ring of Bright Water fame). After his death the cottage became derelict but has since been restored as a visitors centre. Have a good weekend.

Caisteal Maol

This was seen from the harbour of Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye. The seagull was a late arrival :) See PiP for harbour scene. The castle, an ancient seat of Clan Mackinnon, was a fortress commanding the strait of Kyle Akin between Skye and the mainland, through which all ships had to pass or else attempt the stormy passage of the Minch. The present building dates back to the 15th century, but is traditionally reputed to be of much earlier origin. WiKi Best full screen Enjoy the day.

HFF~ Fenceless gate

A gate that has shed its fence some time ago I guess. This rusty gate sitting between the wild garlic was seen on the shore just beyond Broadford harbour. PiP Have a good weekend.

HWW ~ Broadford harbour wall

19 Jun 2024 23 18 217
Broadford on the Isle of Skye has in fact two harbour walls to shelter its fishing boats. This is the furthest from the actual village. In the past Broadford pier was used to ship our Skye marble. Enjoy the day.

The Skye Bridge from Kyleakin

11 Jun 2024 17 10 244
I am on the stony shores of Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye looking at this fine bridge where on the right hand side we see Kyleakin Lighthouse built in 1857 on the small Island of Eilean Bàn . The Island is used as a stepping stone for the bridge as it crosses the mouth of Loch Alsh to the Isle of Skye from the mainland. In fact what some people think is the start of the bridge on the mainland is actually the Carrich Viaduct link constructed at the same time as the bridge itself (just out of frame on the right). Best full screen. Follow PiP for bridge details. Enjoy the day.

The Skye Bridge from above

09 Jun 2024 23 21 240
A look down onto this bridge from the Cnoc Trail on the Isle of Skye itself. The Isle of Skye is connected to the mainland by a road bridge. Connecting the mainland village of Kyle of Lochalsh to the village of Kyleakin on Skye. The bridge construction started in 1992 built by the Scottish company Miller, but designed by a German engineering company DYWIDAG Systems International in collaboration with civil engineering firm Arup. The main bridge is a concrete arch, supported by two piers. This connect Skye to the small island called Eilean Bàn, the rest of the bridge is level across to the mainland. The total distance across is 1.5 miles (2.4km). The main arch is about 35m high (30m clearance for boats on high tide). Apologies for slight camera shake at handheld 300 (450mm) and slow shutter speed. (You would think I would know better by now ! (˚◡˚) ) Enjoy full screen
