The Isle of Arran from Skipness

25 Apr 2023 20 15 177
Last year whilst on a trip to The Mull of Kintyre we visited Skipness and its castle. Whilst there we took a short stroll along its pebbled beach with vistas over to Arran. The small white houses on the centre of this shoreline belong to the village of Lochranza, home of a grand ruined castle and a fine distillery. Perhaps really though, the star of this view is the magnificent sky. Best full screen.

HBM - Lochranza re-visited

17 Oct 2022 16 21 191
A quick whizz through the Isle of Arran brought us via the ferry from ‘The Mull of Kintyre’ back to the village of Lochranza, home of this castle and it’s even more famous ‘Arran Whisky’ distillery. This five minute stop on our way to our next ship at Brodick lacks the nice light on our previous visit but gave us the opportunity if we wanted it, for a rest on these seats. It looks like the castle is having some work done on it now. See Pip for 2017 version HBM, enjoy the day.

Saddell Beach

A view from this beach to the north east and the Isle of Arran. The castle is behind me here some 200 or so metres. This is actually the beach that Paul McCartney used in his ‘Mull of Kintyre’ song with his group ‘Wings’. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrbuDWit1Co Unfortunately, even though we walked as far as the little cottage featured in the video, just off the beach a little further to my left, there was a party of visitors there, and not knowing the significance of that cottage, left my camera unused. What's more I never realised too, how nice the view from the little point back to the castle might have been. - I always have a decision before such a trip of doing more research and spoiling some of the surprises that come with visiting a new place. In todays case, to my regret. (We did know however that this was the beach used in the filming back then for the song but I never watched the video.) Enjoy full screen.

Lochranza castle

A contrasty view of this little castle here at Lochranza on the Isle of Arran. It was actually a Tower house house dating back to the 16th century, although the original castle was built by the MacSweens in the 13th century.

Lochranza on the Isle of Arran, Scotland is without doubt a beautiful place to be. Its shores, mountains, castle and distillery all add to the charm. This is taken from the northern estuary side near Newton.

Blackwaterfoot shore walk

Here on the west coast of the Isle of Arran sits a wonderful little village called Blackwaterfoot and just north by a couple of miles is a great shoreline. Here, you can walk alongside me.

Loch Iorsa

23 Jul 2017 3 4 351
Otherwise known as Iorsa Water. A grand lonely walk from the Arran hamlet of Dougarie brings us to this small loch. A boathouse sits behind me indicating that there might be fish in here. A long walk up the valley ahead would lead us eventually to Loch Tanna where the water is used to distil the famous Arran malt Whisky as the waters flow towards the Northern town of this Island Lochranza.

Glenashdale Falls on the Isle of Arran

At the end of a beautiful walk from Whiting Bay. They actually fall about 140 feet (45 metres). The wispy leaf effect being brought about by this very contre-jour type shot directly into the low sun. Best enjoyed at full size.

Brodick towards Goatfell

14 Jun 2017 2 4 291
A view from the promenade along the front of the capital of the' Isle of Arran', Brodick on the south west coast of Scotland towards its famous majestic mountain, Goatfell. Along the right of the scene in the distance can be seen Brodick Castle. Time for a sit down to enjoy a bit of relaxation.

The beautiful Glen Rosa

14 Jun 2017 5 3 263
A wonderful walk along Glen Rosa on the Isle of Arran brings us down alongside its river caller Glen Rosa Water. Just to the left of me here I also glimpse some wild deer. To the right side, out of picture is Arran's highest mountain Goatfell.

Goatfell from the Glen Rosa lane

The Isle of Arran on the south west coast of Scotland is said to be the whole of Scotland in miniature. Here, along the start of the stunning Glen Rosa path we are constantly accompanied by Arrans highest mountain 'Goatfell'. At 874m it is one of Arrans four 'Corbetts'

Lamlash looking towards Holy Island

A view to this small island from the village of Lamlash on the Isle of Arran. Moments later I had to escape from here fast on the incoming tide.

The mountains of Arran at dusk

At the sun fades leaving the days clouds and mountains in dark silhouette we can enjoy the Isle of Arran even without clear blue skies and sunshine. Taken from just south of the village of Lamlash.

Holy Island lighthouse

Taken from the tiny hamlet of Kingscross on the Isle of Arran, Scotland on a pretty average day for Scotland.

The Seals of Kildonan

23 Jun 2017 6 2 327
Here on Arran just out from the village of Kildonan on Arrans South East coast is a rocky shoreline that is home to these common seals. I took this just as the tide was rising yet further forcing these seals to go swimming.

An Isle of Arran landscape

Taken from just north of Blackwaterfoot looking North to Tormore here on Arran. To the left is the mainland towards Claonaig. Of course the sky is also paramount here. Enjoy.
