Arrow

The Arrow mill in Castleton, Rochdale is a massive old cotton mill. Fortunately, it is one of the few mills that have not been demolished over the last 50 years and is indeed Grade II listed. It is situated on the banks of the Rochdale Canal from where I took this shot of its most impressive chimney. Of course I was taken by the trees sprouting out at this very high part of the structure. The mill no longer spins cotton helped along by its big steam engines with its 22ft diameter flywheel, as it did when it opened in 1908 but is now a storage depot, renting out space. The chimney

Still on the sands at Jenny Browns Point (Silverdale) we see this old chimney on the edge of the beach. A strange thing to see at such a place we thought and later research led me to this: "A nearby chimney, sometimes described as a tower, is grade II listed and has been the subject of archaeological and archival investigations. It is now believed that the chimney is most likely to be the remains of a short-lived copper mining and smelting project set up by Robert Gibson in the 1780s. He was Lord of the Manor of Yealand and incorrectly assumed he had the right to mine for copper at Cragfoot, inland from the point, on land owned by the Townleys of Leighton Hall. The copper was processed in a reverberatory furnace at Jenny Brown's Point of which the remaining chimney was part. The whole operation was abandoned in 1788 after lawsuits, and Gibson died in 1791" WiKi

Ingleton and its Viaduct

Ingleton - an old village of true character in the North Yorkshire Dales area. The story of the viaduct: www.forgottenrelics.co.uk/bridges/ingleton.html The last trains went over this in 1963 and the track was lifted in 1967 - now a gas pipe sits there instead. Nice full size.
