Attuale sede del Comune, il Palazzo dei Priori (o Pretorio o del Podestà) occupa il lato orientale di Piazza della Signoria, trovandosi di fronte al conosciuto Palazzo dei Consoli. Progettato molto probabilmente da M. Gattapone nel 1349, in origine fu destinato come sede del Podestà, capo del potere esecutivo, in contrapposizione al Palazzo dei Consoli (suo gemello per origine) che era sede del potere legislativo. La sua ultimazione non fu possibile negli anni per vari motivi, sia economici che sociali a causa del dilagarsi della peste. Nella facciata che guarda la piazza sono visibili gli esiti della brusca interruzione dei lavori avvenuta nel 1350. Per questo L’edificio si presenta come una grande opera gotica incompiuta ma comunque di notevole valore architettonico. ------------------------------------------------------- The Priori Palace (or Praetorium or of the Podestà), current seat of the Municipality, occupies the eastern side of Piazza della Signoria because it is located in front of the known Palace of Consuls. Designed probably by M. Gattapone in 1349, it was originally intended as seat of the Podestà, head of the executive power, as opposed to the Palace of Consuls (its original twin) that was seat of the legislative power. It was not completed during the following years for different economic and social reasons because of the plague’s spread. In the façade overlooking the square it’s possible to see the outcomes of the brusque interruption of works happened in 1350. For that reason, the building presents itself as a big incomplete gothic artwork, yet of high architectural value.

Un ricordo di Gubbio- Memories of Gubbio

Piazza Grande a Gubbio, tra le più suggestive realizzazioni urbanistiche medievali, fu costruita a partire dal 1321: fu realizzata nel baricentro della città, con imponenti lavori di sistemazione delle strutture di sostegno dello spazio pensile e degli stessi edifici, che appaiono quasi sovradimensionati rispetto al nucleo storico. Palazzo dei Consoli, l'unico portato a termine, eleva la sua mole emergendo sopra la città da qualunque visuale e relazionandosi con la "Platea Communis", che accoglie la Cattedrale. Lo spazio è fortemente scenografico ed è proiettato verso la campagna grazie alla terrazza panoramica. La fine delle autonomie comunali, con l'avvento della signoria dei Gabrielli (1350), segna anche l'interruzione dei lavori: il Palazzo Pretorio rimarrà incompiuto mentre le sostruzioni della piazza saranno completate solo nel 1482. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Piazza Grande in Gubbio, among the most enchanting medieval urban designs, was built starting from 1321: it was executed in the city’s epicentre, through imposing renovation works of the structures supporting the balcony space and the buildings, which appear slightly oversized compared to their setting. The bulk of Consoli Palace, the only completed building, rises and dominates the skyline from any point of view and relates with the “Platea Communis" housing the Cathedral. The space is highly scenic and is oriented towards the countryside thanks to the panoramic terrace. The end of communal autonomyi with the arrival of the Gabrielli Dominion (1350) also marks the interruption of building works: the Pretorio Palace remains incomplete whereas the square’s buildings were completed only in 1482.
