Il Parco del Delta del Po della Regione Emilia - Romagna sorge su un'area con caratteristiche ambientali ed ecologiche uniche. Si estende, infatti, su una superficie eterogena di oltre 52.000 ettari, abbracciando ambienti ricchi di biodiversità, dalle aree umide alle pinete, dalle acque salmastre alle acque dolci. Questa ricchezza ambientale, si riflette anche nelle numerose specie animali e vegetali identificate all'interno del Parco: quasi 300 specie di uccelli, 50 specie di pesci, 10 specie di anfibi, 15 specie di rettili, 40 specie di mammiferi e più di 1000 specie vegetali. Oltre al valore ambientale e naturalistico, il Parco è tra le Aree Protette più antropizzate ed economicamente sviluppate in Italia, testimonianza del crocevia culturale ed economico tra Occidente ed Oriente presente fin dal passato. La piccola Isola di San Giulio, raggiungibile in battello o in motoscafo, è dominata dalla basilica romanica, dal palazzo vescovile e dall’abbazia benedettina. La leggenda narra che quest'isola, distante non più di 400 metri dalla riva di Orta, un tempo era uno scoglio abitato da serpi e terribili mostri, fino a quando nel 390 vi approdò San Giulio: attraversando le acque del lago sopra il suo mantello e guidato nella tempesta dal suo bastone, il Santo fondò una chiesa, nella quale scelse poi di essere sepolto, e trasformò l'isola nel centro di evangelizzazione di tutta la regione. Il turista viene accolto sull'isola da una breve scalinata che conduce alla suggestiva basilica romanica, la principale attrattiva del posto. La visita prosegue attraverso una stradina che percorre l'intera isola; si tratta della "via del silenzio e della meditazione", suggestivo connubio tra spiritualità e architettura. Camminando per i vicoli di San Giulio si raggiunge l'ottocentesco Palazzo dei Vescovi e l'Abbazia Benedettina Mater Ecclesiae: in questo affascinante convento di clausura femminile le monache, che risiedono stabilmente sull'isola, trascorrono le loro giornate dedicandosi alla preghiera, allo studio, al restauro di antichi e preziosi paramenti sacri, alla confezione delle ostie e alla preparazione del celebre "pane di San Giulio".
