A friend of mine who is a wildlife biologist tells me these are snow geese that are migrating from northern Canada to the southern USA. This afternoon, I saw four large flocks of these arriving in Mississippi. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_goose

Early in the morning, the dogs and I walked to the pond. There were no birds there, but as I was returning to the house, I heard some geese flying in. When I returned to the pond, There were two Canada geese, two wood ducks, and the usual two hooded mergansers.
