Ailsa Craig is an island of 240 acres in the outer Firth of Clyde, 16 km (8+1⁄2 miles) west of mainland Scotland. The microgranite has long been quarried to make curling stones. The island is now a bird sanctuary, leased by the RSPB until 2050. ] Huge numbers of gannets nest here. Rats were probably introduced via shipwrecks; supposedly, a coal boat that sank offshore was the first culprit and caused great harm to the nesting bird populations, with the puffins proving vulnerable to the extent of extinction as breeding birds. After a long campaign using pioneering techniques, the rats were eradicated in 1991, and now puffins are once again raising young on the island with many other benefits accruing to both the fauna and the flora.

This memorial was commissioned in 2005 by Whitby Civic Society who wanted a memorial to seamen which would be both practical and decorative. It takes the form of galvanised steel gates which incorporate a design of a modern trawler alongside a ship from Capatain Cook's era. In the centre there is a motif of a landed catch. This replaced the original storm gates which close off the West Pier during stormy weather.

On Sunday afternoons, during term time just after church, students in their scarlet gowns take a traditional walk along the long pier and back The more daring students walking back along a narrow and high part of the wall. It's a lovely sight to see. If it wasn't windy, Ii used to walk along the top wall of the pier, gripping a tight hold of my dad's hand. I didn't walk on the top of the pier this visit, but did climb the ladder to the top to get this photo.
