We are away from the computer for a week. Enjoy your photography. The lead statue of Hercules at Chirk Castle, North Wales, was commissioned in the 1720s and originally stood at the entrance to the castle, together with a figure of Mars. In 1770 it was moved to a nearby wood, from where it was retrieved in 1983, before being restored and positioned here by the National Trust. The Castle is shown in the background, with formal gardens of clipped yew. The PiP shows carpets of snowdrops covering the woodland floor.

'Fame' borne by Pegasus.

Sculptor: Andrew Carpenter (c.1676-1737). Year of creation:1705 This example was probably cast using Montgomeryshire lead from the Llangynog mines owned by the Powis family. Its original position at Powis was as the centrepiece of a fountain in the Baroque water gardens at the foot of the garden terraces which had been largely completed by 1705. The water garden was demolished between 1801 and 1809, and the statue was then moved and re- sited into the courtyard. The sculpture was restored in 1987.

Entrance to Powis Castle

Powis Castle is a medieval castle, fortress and grand country house near Welshpool, in Powys, Wales. The castle is known for its formal gardens which are exceptional. The present castle was built in the 13th century. The property is under the care of the National Trust. In the centre of the oval lawn is a statue called 'Fame'. It is made of lead and is mounted on a stone base. The statue depicts the winged female figure of Fame borne by Pegasus. I have never seen this entrance so devoid of people. We were the first to check in for the opening morning slot, and reaped the benefits.

Chirk Castle. Lucchesi Bronze Nymph

05 Nov 2018 28 24 1438
Andrea Carlo Lucchesi (1860 – 1924) was an Anglo-Italian sculptor born in London, whose father, from Tuscany, was a sculptor before him. Lucchesi trained at the West London School of Art and then at the Royal Academy. He started exhibiting in 1881. Lucchesi was an exponent of the late 19th-century British New Sculpture movement, a school based on naturalism and symbolism. His work, often mysterious and provocative, featured many female nudes; he considered the female figure to be “nature’s masterpiece”. There are four bronze nymphs by Lucchesi in the grounds of Chirk Castle. The statues were installed in the gardens by Lord and Lady Howard de Walden, who leased the castle from the Myddelton family from 1911 to 1946. Thomas Scott-Ellis, 8th Baron Howard de Walden, was a writer and patron of the arts and spent vast sums repairing and re-fitting the castle.
