Cette région très montagneuse des Picos de Europa m'a toujours fasciné! Sa situation au "Far West" de notre continent, sa position de "sentinelle" a quelques chose de magique!

Dear Isabel* you awaken memories and great longing...
Many many years ago I was in the Picos de Europeo and the Lagos di Covadonga. We camped there. once a cow tripped over the guy ropes of our two tents that were standing close together... but the cow had to go right through there.
We were very, very few people up there.
But suddenly in the night it started to rumble and e and engine noises could be heard. when we checked, about 2-3 hours into the night, horses and trucks came up the really very narrow mountain road. The next morning there were many many people there...
Trucks, horses, jeeps, trucks that turned into so-called food stalls. and many many people in costume, bands playing up the path.
There I ate the 'tortilla de patatas' for the first time and learned to love it !!! Hmmm what a treat!!
The weather wasn't the best, it rained at times. and the young girls in their traditional costumes took off their skirts and pulled the back part over their heads, they had enough beautiful white petticoats on.. The dancing shoes, laced up, got wet in the mud.
Later there were horse racing, tug of war, music and dancing.
! A big folk festival all day long.
...And we happened to be there up there. But then there was silence again!!! Luckily !! and we had peace again. That was in 1987
Unfortunately, I couldn't find any more information on the Internet as to whether these folkloric festivals in July are still celebrated up there at the lake and what they are called.

The Shepherd's Festival in Vega de Enol (Covadonga lakes), which is held every year on 25th July. On this day there are rural games, a bareback horse race, a traditional crafts competition, exhibitions, performances by folk groups and a climb up the Porra de Enol.

The pilgrims set off from Cangas de Onís at 08:00 in the morning for the meadow of Lake Enol, the only night of the year when camping is permitted. At 10:00 the traditional mass begins in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd. Afterwards, the equitable distribution of pastures takes place, the administrator of the pastures is elected and the prettiest shepherdess is chosen.

Curiosity: For many, especially the younger ones, the party begins the night before when they go up to the Vega de Enol to have drinks and dance in the beach bars.

Second time I am there, not many people, but both times I had very rainy nasty weather. This time I was expecting snow, saw some, but had rain almost all the hikes.

Amazing landscape and shot!

A beautiful, but wild and rugged landscape. I love the old building, especially how the terracotta roof tiles have been covered in rocks to make them more secure. The detail is superb.
