THIS IS A TYPICAL HOUSE FROM ALGARVE. BEFORE MASS TOURISM AND CONCRETE INVASION WE LIVED IN HOUSES LIKE THIS ONE, THE BAND ON THE TOP IS CALLED "PLATIBANDA" AND THEY WERE ALL DIFFERENT. ON TOP WE HAS NO ROOFS BUT A TERRACE, CALLED "AÇOTEIA" TO PUT FIGS AND DAMASCUS TO DRY, ALSO ALMONDS AND THE LAUNDRY.
NOWADAYS AND YEAR AFTER YEAR THOSE HOUSES ARE REPLACED BY STUPID BUILDINGS, BUT MONEY IS MONEY, UNFORTUNATELY.
A WAY OF LIFE I MISS...

In it's day it was the latest thing.

I grew up in a garden, all iris and peonies, and that land is all lawn now, but if nobody has put money into it,, the house is decrepit. I don't know - I'm never likely to go back there to see. Not worth the trip now.

Memories... better keep them as memories. The house I was born was taken by the sea... well, it was more a shed than a house but I wanted to legalize it and rehab it, I was in the administrative process when it happen. I will never go to that island again, I just have my memories and a photo...

Simple, but really lovely architecture..........I love the detail in the facade and the bright colours. Such a shame it's been left to decay like this. I guess it will soon be demolished and someone will put a "modern" house in it's place.

They are beautiful even in decay, Isabel. I can imagine what they must have been like when kept up and full of life, with laundry flying on the "roof" and the scent of drying fruit ...
