So colorful, Isabel. Where I come from there is also a tradition to burn a scary figure (in our case, an old hag), but unfortunately it includes no colorful costumes (and has been dying away in the last years).

Yes and generally all connected to nature's cycles, from a time when we still felt our connection to the land ...
What I enjoyed, as a kid, about the "Burning of the Old Hag" (which I suppose represented winter) was that people made up an ironic testament in which the hag would set out what she was leaving in heredity to the various members of the community, like "I leave my nastier sins to the curate, and my coat full of holes to Elisabetta [someone who was vain and a bit too fashion conscious]" and so on. It was at times a little cutting but overall pretty hilarious.
