Decade = 1930s

Posted at Fredericton on August 15, 1931 to Miss Alice Kilbourn, So. Lancaster, Massachusetts, with a note from A. B. Jones. The card has a depiction of the Canadian coat of arms on the back.

Postmarked September 6, 1939 at Moosomin, Sask. The U.K. had declared war on Germany on September 3 and Canada's Parliament met the day after this postcard was mailed and had officially declared war itself by September 10. Which is interesting, because the postcard was mailed by an American named Herman Schmidt -- not a name you'd have wanted to have just about then. It was addressed to his father, Alfred Schmidt at Berlin, N.H., U.S.A., 145 Summer St., but readdressed to Lewiston, Maine: "Dear Folks, Here for just a few hours. Will write you from 'Calgary'. In haste. Love to all, Herman. P.S. Everything going great." Herman wrote in block capitals -- unusual but nice for transcribing. Although mailed in 1939, this appears to be a Golden Age card and is by Rumsey & Co.

Posted July 14, 1934 at Saint John, to Mrs. Eva Starkey, 47 Harvest St., Lynn, Mass., from Avis Hingston: "Some ride. Beautiful scenery and wonderful weather." Valentine-Black card no. 113,118 J.V.

Postmarked at New Bedford, Mass., August 26, 1937 to Mrs A. T. Bates, 412 Washington St., Whitman, Mass., with a short letter. Numbered 113702.

Valentine-Black card no. 112,448 J.V., posted February 24, 1932 to Mrs Josiah Gordon, 236 Fulton Terrace, Cliffside Park, N.J.: "Nothing to do but travel. I wonder where I'll land next. Muriel."

Mailed September 6, 1939, 5 days after Canada declared war on Germany. Hence the message: "Dear Marj. I am right in the war district. Nothing but soldiers up here. Woo. Woo. AYF, Ethyl." (To Miss Marjorie Sherwood, 415 E. Glenoaks Blvd., Glendale, California." Valentine-Black card 115,238 (note that "V.B." replaced "J.V." next to the serial numbers on the Valentine-Black cards).
