Canal du Midi

Canal du Midi
The Canal du Midi connects the Atlantic with the Mediterranean, Toulouse and Sete. Constructed between 1661 and 1681 the canal is one of the oldest in Europe which is still in operation. The construction was motivated first by the wheat trade.
Nowadays the canal is no more used for the transport of goods. Railway and trucks do this job much faster. But the canal became a touristic attraction: boat-charters, restaurant and hotel boats. A lot of very nice ways to walk along or to cycle.
The canal was inscribed as a UNESCO World Hertage Site in 1996

Marco F. Delminho, Berny, , Belleuse and 39 other people have particularly liked this photo
