Xinjiang, China. Kashgar Old City is a new reconstruction of the ancient Silk Road Town. Despite being new, it is a visual delight, as in this street, using many ancient pillars, and elements salvaged from the old town. Yes, the old town was very interesting and picturesque, but insanitary, crowded and far from ideal living conditions. I have enjoyed both the old, and the new.

Happy New Year everyone. For personal renewal, good health and for creative joy in capturing images of your world.
Peace and love, Diana

HFF Diana. The Chinese are good at building new historic places. On a daughter's high school trip there 20 years ago in Xian an old pagoda had appeared since the previous trip according to the teacher running the trip.

I was there during the transition phase. Part of the sterile new "Old Town" had already been built, and the rest was being ruthlessly demolished. Sad! Greetings Günter

It is. I was there in 2000 when Kashgar was just a medium sized town. Almost all the Old Kashgar, in fact. Virtually no traffic, few roads. It was a crowded warren with few comforts for dwellers ( no piped water). It is a large, modern city now. Locals said they were delighted to have electricity, water, internet etc. yes thé Chinese are relentless with renewal, and with imposing social and cultural expectations. Here it is to stop radical Islam and separatism. Uighur people, thé majority here, seemed cheerful, healthy, well fed and very open and friendly. The new Old City is charming, interesting, varied and friendly.

Thank you for your answer. I got a slightly different impression there. Also through a confidential conversation with a Uyghur hotel employee. The Chinese are primarily trying to impose their hegemony. And of course that works better if you dissolve the old structures. For me, the new ‘old town’ is - sorry - kitsch, which may appeal to the Chinese and Americans, but has little to do with the old Kashgar. The inhabitants of old Kashgar, for example, would never have had the idea of attaching wagon wheels to the walls of their houses or simply placing the beautiful columns (without function) in front of the houses ...
No offence intended. I really appreciate your reports and pictures and look forward to more, Günter

Agree fully, Günter. Thanks for the reply. And yes..thé inhabitants of old would not have decorated like this. But the current place is lively and bustling and a very large draw for domestic tourists, which brings income to the people. And it looks nicer than high rise concrete housing. I know the Chinese are imposing their hegemony…all through China. In 2000 there were a lot of little mosques in the town, and a lot of women veiled. With spreading radical Islam it also was a hotspot in Xinjiang for breeding terrorist attacks and a more fundamental Islamic way of life. The Chinese focus on Xinjiang was primarily to reduce terrorist incidents by Islamists, which did occur throughout China, with Xinjiang as their origin. I think now thé Uighurs are still able to follow very moderate Islam if they choose. We brought my Friend Sher Baz from far north Pakistan with us to Kashgar and he shares a common language (not Chinese) with Kashgar people. He was able to get more information. People seem much happier with increased prosperity and living conditions, while following their own ethnic and cultural practices. The Chinese hegemony would be there whatever the case, as we both know. Happy new year and happy travels!

A photograph that you will remember for a lifetime, as well as its author. As you say, this is a real visual delight. I didn't know that something so lavish, worthy of a fantasy film set, could exist. I wish you all the best, my friend.

Diana, I always love your travel reports and the stories around them. Sometimes I'm with you when I follow your travels - roughly - in my books.

Here are some of my wonderful german art and photo books with lots of text and photos:

1. Yamashita, Michael, Marco Polo. Eine wundersame Reise. (Marco Polo. A wondrous journey.)
Translated from English by Cornelia Panzacchi. Publisher GEO - Frederking & Thaler. 503 p.

- He wrote, among other things: 'While Marco Polo was mainly worried about bandits and diseases (he is said to have spent about a year recovering from malaria), our concerns are mainly about landmines and possible car breakdowns... -'

2. Baumann, Bruno: Abenreuer Seidenstrasse. Auf den Spuren alter Karawanenwege. (Adventure Silk Road. On the trail of old caravan routes). A documentation of the past and present. Publisher Herbig. 286 p.

3. Dschingis Kahn und seine Erben. Das Weltreich der Mongolen

Hello Anna. I really enjoyed reading your comment. Thank you. Your books sound really interesting and very similar to the types of books in which I immerse myself. The Silk Road has such a fascinating and awe-inspiring history. Today the travel is much less hazardous and far quicker than even 25 years ago! I find it exhilarating to read and view testimonies of the distant past journeys. It was such a crossroad of ideas, inventions, invasions, religious movements…..
Sending you a big hug and wishes for a wonderful weekend.
