In the rainforests
Folder: Nature
The rainforest fig
A patch of sunlight breaking through the greenery of the rainforest to light the base of this fig. I'm unsure of the exact species (there are several), but they all parasitise other trees. They grow from a seed dropped by birds high in the branches of the host, then drop roots to ground level and proceed to grow around the host tree, strangling it in the process. Best viewed on black.
Explored.
Fungi taking over
Fungi on rotting timber in temperate rainforest, NSW south coast.
Explored.
In the rainforest
Visiting a patch of temperate rainforest. Best viewed large.
The Strangler Fig
In the rainforest at the Mt Tamborine National Park. Strangler Figs grow from seeds dropped high in the branches of existing trees, then proceed to take over their hosts - far more detail given in the sign copied in the note.
Subtropical rainforest
Now back from my latest wanderings and I'll try to catch up over the coming days. This is subtropical rainforest at the edge of the National Park, on the road to Kangaroo Valley. Quite a comparison with the cleared farmland below!
