In the rural areas of Australia, letterboxes are found alongside major roads, often in groups at intersections of lesser roads. Why? Because the rural mail services travel along the main roads, residents living away from them need to erect letterboxes on the mail route.

The letterbox
Ever wondered where I picked up my online ID of "Tiabunna"? The letterbox for our former rural property gives the answer. This was at the 'main road' (behind the camera), the house was still 4km from here on the road you see. :-) Happy Fence Friday for the first time in 2015.
More letterboxes
In case my previous shot of our old letterbox seemed unusual, it's worth mentioning that rural letterboxes in Australia come in a huge diversity of styles - here are some more. I'd suggest best on black.

Billy goat box
I haven't posted a letterbox image for a while. Today, while travelling, we passed this billy goat letterbox that was too good to resist. :-)

The guard dog
Yes, at property 1887 on this road, Pluto even carries a rifle as part of his guard duties. :-) Another in my series on Australian roadside rural letterboxes.

Old letterboxes
Back in 1861, Nerrigundah was a thriving little gold mining town when thousands of miners, seeking fortunes, arrived in the area. The town had five pubs, three shops, a police station and courthouse, etc. The gold is long gone and only about 25 people now live in the area, following various agricultural pursuits. These old letterboxes were in the centre of the town, I doubt they're even in use now.
