Roadside bench

Roadside bench
Taken out on the plains of western Queensland, somewhere between Betoota and Birdsville. This area is now under vast flooding - about 1 million sq km, link to map from "The Guardian" : four times the size of the United Kingdom, larger than France and Germany combined, and larger than Texas. This is the largest flood in this area on record and follows an extreme weather event with many places having more than their annual total rainfall in four days. Because the area is so large and flat, the floods are likely to take months to flow away inland to Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre..

Well, at least it was dry when this was taken, so Happy Bench Monday, everyone.

That shelter is needed in the searing heat but no use against floods!

A great photo here of your typical hot dry area and so I am shocked by your news of all the flooding there. I have not heard anything on the British media about that. I must be a great shock to the farmers and livestock there as well as the inhabitants. All looks like a long job to get it dry again. I hope all gets well soon.

HBM, enjoy the week.

I've also found, when overseas, that Australia has little news coverage, Herb. I guess, in this case, it's possibly not much reported because it's an area with a relatively small population. Still, it's estimated that something like 150,000 head of livestock will be lost and, of course considerable other damage.

Fabulous landscape - difficult to imagine the size of the flood even looking at the map.

But the artesian wells should fill up again - some consolation to the farmers and their stock.

Riesige Dimensionen und kaum vorstellbar. Andererseits sieht der Landstrich so aus, als würde er sich über etwas Wasser freuen. HBM und eine schöne Woche, George.
