Sad landscape

Sad landscape
small-P1070162Some 45 years ago, we often travelled down this road, then unsealed and with few vehicles, through beautiful native eucalypt forests. I took a photo of my son at about the location of the main image and, some years later, my daughter painted a copy of it (PiP). View main image large.

I recently returned along the road for the first time in years. It had been sealed for the use of logging trucks and I was appalled at what has been done by the forestry industry. Not only have vast areas been clear-felled, but they are being replaced by forests of non-native pines (the dark areas in the background). These are totally unsuited to the natural biota of the area.

Amelia, Malik Raoulda, Alass, Fred Fouarge and 18 other people have particularly liked this photo

It is sad to see and read what you are saying about this deforestation, George.
Apparently, however, the pursuit of profit takes precedence over the preservation of a healthy nature and the global climate - as in Brazil...
I know how beautiful and relaxing it is to hike through eucalyptus forests from my travels to the Canary Islands...

This happens here, too. Clear cutting and then replanting with non-native trees that are suitable for logging. Huge areas of the Olympic Peninsula and of the Cascades have so sufffered.

Your daughter is a talented artist George. It's a beautiful painting.
Non natives species are a bad idea. You would think they would
know better by now! I can imagine how it must have upset you
to see such a change.

It is sad George and replacing the trees with non native pines seems so wrong, but it is an excellent shot. You can see for miles. Your daughter's painting is beautiful. She is very talented

Things change, George and often bit for the better. Money is quite often the root of the matter, and I suspect that the first thought is the cash to be earned from the new 'crop'. What a lovely painting, at least the mountains in the background haven't changed.
