Much as this resembles a certain virus, you'll be glad to know it is unrelated. :-)
My thanks to aNNa schramm for giving what seems the probable correct ID, that it's Leucospermum cordifolium which goes by the common name of "Nodding Pincushion". Growing in a neighbour's garden.
