It's about the environment

Today is World Environment Day, so I thought I'd post something relevant to our local environment. This lovely flower (which also comes in some other shades - see PiP) is an invasive environmental weed. It goes by the name of African Daisy (Osteospermum fruiticosum). Like many of our weeds, it is a "garden escapee" and many people still cultivate it, but it produces massive quantities of viable seeds which spread rapidly - in places where it shouldn't be! As a Landcare volunteer, I join others in trying to eliminate it and other weeds from the local nature reserve.

Beautiful flower portraits, George!
Nevertheless, we should actually be careful, as beautiful as many flowers
from other countries and/or climates are.

I'm afraid that we grow this in gardens in the UK. I don't have it in my garden though, and I don't think it seeds here. we have a very invasive plant here too. It is called Himalayan balsam was introduced as a garden plant in 1839, but soon escaped and became widely naturalised along riverbanks and ditches, especially close to towns. It is fast-growing and spreads quickly, invading wet habitat at the expense of other, native flowers. It can clog up a small river or a canal very quickly.

We don't have this but have our own problems with other noxious weeds. See them on my daily walks.
