Old gold diggings

Old gold diggings
Back in the 1860s, the Araluen Valley was the richest alluvial goldfield in NSW, with a population of about 35,000. The miners turned over much of the landscape, such as this area, in their search for fortunes. A stitched panorama of two images, view large.

HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

There are dredgelands in the western US that are still useless for anything else, due to placer mining with dredges--and they started as farmland! Some of the eastern suburbs of Sacramento, California are built on them--at least you don't feel bad about urban sprawl in that case. Are these lands ruined for farming, at least for a few centuries?

It sounds as if they may have been fortunate here that things weren't churned up more, Steve. This area is only used for grazing and (depending on seasons) seems fairly good for that.
