part of the extensive walls around the town, this section enclosing the bishop's palace gardens. built upon a roman core, most of the extant bastions must date from the c13, probably cut down in the age of the cannon.

c15 houses built c.1400 for the vicars of the cathedral, much altered in the c18. the opposite side of the close was turned to face south street as shops in 1825, and the gatehouse at the south end destroyed, so this group lacks the completeness of wells.
