This is remarkable! I've never found a gravestone like it. I hope its listed.

It is listed, though too few are. Broken as you'll see in another shot, and in dire need of mending before it falls apart. Once they lie flat, the slate spalls off, delaminating, and the carving is soon lost. Shame really.

I've found recently that the National Lottery are paying for churchyard 'improvement' schemes which will cause harm to seventeenth and eighteenth century memorials. Neither they are the Church of England seem to care.

I'm personally none too enamoured with some of the Churches Conservation Trust's flashier projects; "restoration" of All Souls Bolton spent millions on modern pods filling the nave. Too much money is rarely good for retaining the past.

The CCT don't appear to think that people who live in deprived communities are capable of appreciating old churches in the way that wealthy suburban upper middle class and rural communities are. Having seen schemes for their churches in Sunderland and Ipswich (lottery funded) and the Bolton one I'm pretty disillusioned with them.
