detail of the west window, a WWI memorial of the 1920s by burlison and grylls full of martial saints and old testament militants, along with shields of some of the english colonies that fought in the war. india's there too, conspicuously the only non-white soldiers mentioned, despite the massive contribution of the empire. more than a third of britain's men in the war came from around the world; the 10000 from the west indies were lucky enough to rarely be trusted to fight on the front line and so mostly survived, an unknown number died at the hands of racist mobs throughout britain before most were forcibly repatriated after the war. empire veterans were only invited to parade at the cenotaph in the year 2000.
