london orphan asylum, lower clapton, hackney (2)

portico of 1823-5 by w.s. inman, built for the london orphan asylum, later the facade of the salvation army congress hall before standing ruined for many years. it currently screens part of clapton school, the architect of which obviously felt no affinity with it and made no real use of it at all. it looks like he had to keep it, but didn't know what to do with it. even as a fragment it blows the modern work away, athens down a clapton back street.
