c.l. witteronge's dirce statue at tate britain, london

camp as anything; edwardian sex and death on sir charles lawes-witteronge's 1906 bronze of dirce, killed by being tied to the back of the farnese bull. it sexualises the violent death of a pulchritudinous woman and used art as a fig leaf for repressed edwardian desire. the craftsmanship is far better than the design , which tells us more than we want to know about the artist's subconscious mind.
