view down the tunnel from the western end. built between 1814-18 by the canal's own engineer james morgan, and opened in 1820 with brass bands and cannon fire. at 960 yards I think that this is the longest canal tunnel in london, and probably the longest still in use in the south east. there's no tow path, barges had to be legged through originally by bargees lying on top and walking against the roof.
