the passageway to the square runs through the early c18 premises of berry bros. and rudd, whose wine vaults are underneath. on the left the odd panelling actually provides clever storage for the protective shutters that fitted over the shop windows, hence the handles at the bottom to make it easier to lift them out. on the right above more conventional panelling you can see the timber framed construction of the back parts of the building. many of the premises around here were built like this in the late c17, retaining half timbering behind rebuilt facades.

it is indeed, probably london's smallest public square and site of the last duel known to have been fought in london. underneath lie the extensive vaults of berry bros. and rudd, which stretch as far as pall mall. the timber framing dates from the late c17, and the panels on the walls are clever storage for the shutters for the front of the shop. all the land round here is crown estate, so is unlikely to change for a while yet.
the legation of the short-lived republic of texas was based here in the 1840s, apparently over the shop.
