bury st edmunds abbey, suffolk

detail of the west end of the abbey church built c.1140, the ruins full of c18 and c19 houses, and the fenestration is wholly victorian. the wall with big blocked openings led from the two storeyed chapel that stood between the southern octagonal tower added c.1190 and the main westwork, opening into the south west transept .
