gable, townsend school, rochester st., westminster

the arms of the rev, chauncy hare townshend on the gable of this foundation, paid for by a bequest in his will. known mostly for his bequests of artworks to museums, he was a friend of the baroness burdett couttes and of dickens, to whom he left the somewhat poisoned chalice of his religious writings, with publication in mind, a somewhat onerous task but one that dickens seems to have fulfilled. probably not a best seller, even then.
