I can't agree with all of his conclusions, but paul binski's essay on the gothic smile comes up with some interesting interpretations of these figures, seeing them as site specific, linking these angel musicians at the east end to the psalms sung during lauds at dawn, whilst the imagery of fall and redemption further west is deemed to be related to the mass on the high altar there. he also posits a link between the appearance of david in aisle bosses and triforium with the cult of st.hugh, and makes the ironic point that the angels' instruments weren't permitted within contemporary liturgy.
