mercers' christ

mercers' christ
superb carving of the dead christ of c.1500, made for the chapel of the mercers' city livery company. made to be seen from this side and set against a wall, most likely as part of an unusual easter sepulchre, its imagery of the dead christ lying on the imperial robe truly unique. amongst the cloth a scroll runs around the figure, on this side : HVMILIAVIT SEMETIPSVM FACTVS OBEDIEVS
(sic) VSQVE AD MORTEM : MORTEM AVTEM CRVCIS. PAVLVS EPTS AD
PHILIPPENS; on the other : [I]N P[AC]E FACTVS EST LOCVS EVS . . . ; at the head : ' IHE . NAS. REX. JU [D].
