royston cave

royston cave
man made cave under royston in herts. covered in rustic late mediaeval religious carvings. here are st.catherine with her wheel, two calvaries, a dove and many other part figures, some just disembodied heads. they may be prisoner carvings; some amateur spent a lot of time carving these in a hole in the ground that had no easy access, so they may date from the religious wars of the c16, or be the work of c15 heretics, or just bored thieves. I think we can rule out templars or little green men.
