almshouses founded 1168-9 just outside the old north gate of the town. the remains are of the infirmary nave arcades, built in the late c12, the blocked openings in the east wall once leading to the chapel, now overbuilt with 1826 almshouses. the two lower openings may have been in a stone rood screen, with the wall only continued up to the roof later on.
