peacock , holland park house, london

a peacock stalks across the ruined base of the jacobean mansion destroyed in the war. one wing was retained with part of the facade; there seems to have been little money or imagination to spare when it came to dealing with the ruins of london at that time, though the peacocks are a move in the right direction . the ruined house was demolished in 1955. the stair tower and all the windows are new of course, as the main body of the house stood here. only the left hand doorway and the surrounding bricks are original, the back wall of the house stands only two foot high now.
