the sleep of sorrow and the dream of joy

the sleep of sorrow and the dream of joy
carved as a rather dubious allegory of the italian risorgimento by raffaelle monti in 1861, this sculpture gained enormous fame at the great exhibition of 1862, countless small copies being made in parian ware. monti had already been here for some time by then, carving effigies such as that at hatherop in glos. , after this his veiled females become what he is known for. he died here in 1881.
