christ church cathedral, oxford
the tower base over the crossing dates from the late c12, the tower top and spire are of c.1250. this cathedral cannot be circumnavigated, it is contained within the canon's gardens and in many ways feels the most privatised cathedral. you cannot walk around it outside at all, and you have to pay £7 to get inside. it has some great stuff inside, but is now a tourist attraction full of japanese tour parties snapping away rather than a church for the people.
