if you can get past the aggressively unfriendly security guard on the door, who seems determined to put visitors off, and pay your £4 entry fee, this spanish /portuguese synagogue is the oldest extant and in use in britain. it was built in 1699-1701 by the carpenter joseph avis, roughly following the model of amsterdam's great synagogue, details being provided either by avis or henry ramsey. it reminded me somewhat of the synagogue at carpentras in france. it could on first sight be mistaken for any towerless city church or chapel, and replaced that built in creechurch lane by the newly permitted jewish community in 1656. some of the benches here remain from the earlier building, and there used to be an ark featuring paintings of moses and elijah too, but this is now hidden away as not toeing the iconoclastic party line.

the builder was a quaker, joseph avis, who gave back the extra profit he made when the materials came to less than he had estimated. queen anne - princess at the time- gave the larger timbers.
