the so-called penitential seat or carrel, which looks at the latest mid c16 to me, and obviously part of a set continuing to the right. the sunken fields and mouldings are cut into solid wood, not applied, and the top rail is only complete on the left side which has a support for coving. the mottos refer to sin and death, and are spoken by two birds, one black, one white. whilst the idea of a hand of meditation seems laudian, the depiction of the clouds and birds along with the fact that everything is in black letter latin makes me prefer an earlier date .
