bucklebury church

view of church from s.e., with c12 nave, c15 tower.
quietly unassuming at first sight, just another parish church, but this place belongs in any top thousand, forcibly reminding you why you visit them; for their palimpsest nature with its layer upon layer of history, for their inexpressible atmosphere, for the architectural surprises without and within, for the unbelievably fine artworks in such rustic surroundings.
that such places still exist relatively unknown so close to yet so far from modern towns and main roads is a wonder: that english parish churches continue to surprise and amaze after so many decades is my own private miracle.
