henham church

one capital of the north arcade has a virgin and child carved on it, with an angel censor on each side. mid c14, I'd say, though pevsner reckoned that this was c16 and dated the arcade. it's obvious that carving and capital date from the same time, the arcade with its piers of quatrefoil plan looks very c14 to me, and whilst this carving seems very sophisticated for the mid c14, the pose is to be seen on the flawford alabaster madonna dated c.1350 or so.
