tombs by butterfield, tottenham cemetery, london

the victorian gothic architect william butterfield 1814-1900 is buried in his family tomb, just beyond that of the vicar of all hallows, the tottenham church at which he worshipped. the two tombs are similar and the lettering almost gone, but it is just possible to make out the name butterfield on the western tomb, which is slightly less ornate. the other tomb has a central boss on the cross, and its edges have a protruding lip giving "eaves" to the "roof"; this must be the vicar's. both tombs stand by a gate in tottenham cemetery
