winchester house, southwark, london
the remains of the mid c14 great hall of the palace of the bishop of winchester, with the rose window above the 3 doors that led to the offices. the south bank of the thames was popular with nobles and prelates in the c13 and c14; by the c16 the bishops owned bathhouses and brothels there, and the area later slid so far downmarket as to house even theatres and actors.
