mithraeum, queen victoria street, london


this must be the oldest religious building known in the city of london, probably in use from the late c2- early c4. like a church , it had an apse at one end, a vestibule at the other, rows of columns dividing the 'aisles' used for seating from the central 'nave', and a wooden well or font near the altar and sanctuary. this is a poor restoration, and seems little regarded for what pevsner called one of the most important roman buildings found in britain
