I was surprised that the flash made such a huge difference.

I see it and read your answer.
You can go on your settings ans choose to leave EXIFs visible... if you want, but I think we all should because it can help others, I do consider it like that, a way to learn, not a show-off (anyhow it is not the general mood here on ipernity!)

Etrange résultat...
Le flash est sensé apporter de la lumière au premier plan tout en gardant à l'arrière plan sa lumière propre. Dans cet exemple, une surexposition générale semble avoir été provoquée. Je suis d'accord avec Xata, les réglages de l'appareil ont surement été modifiés entre les deux prises de vues

I put the EXIF-DATA in the description (see above). You are right: I was on AV-Modus and did only open the flash. Camera changed the shutter speed accordingly. But I will take a new trial and keep aperture and shutter speed fixed. Will show results in PiP.

According to the Exif data you provided, it appears that the exposure setting changed between non-flashed and flashed versions, which would have significantly changed the exposure of the background as well as foreground of the images. It looks like you used faster exposure for the non-flashed image than the one with flash, so it is hard to tell how flash fill-in would have impacted the flash version compared to non-flashed. I would love to see this comparison between the two with exposure settings the same, because the subject and location you chose were a perfect fit for this technique! :-)

Valfal, you are right. I took another pair of pictures with fixed aperture and shutter speed, only changed the flash. You can see the results (not spectacular) in the PiP.

Pour moi, la première version sans flash a un arrière-plan correctement exposé. (Sur toutes les autres il est surexposé) Je serais donc parti des valeurs Exifs de cette première photo et j'aurais intégrer le flash avec ces valeurs juste pour ajouter ce qu'il faut de lumière sur le volubilis.

Yes you are right, but this was not possible, because the second set of pictures was taken some hours later and the sun did not shine as bright. So I tried 1/1600 sec. and it was too dark.

The background of the left photo with the foreground of the left PIP would have been close to ideal. You've done a lot of experimenting here and that's what it's all about. Kudos to you for your efforts! And for the extra set of images. :)
